I direct SIDN Labs, the research team of SIDN. SIDN is the not-for-profit company that manages ".nl", the Top-level Domain (TLD) of the Netherlands.

SIDN Labs conducts research and develops new technologies to improve the operational security, privacy, stability, resilience, and interoperability of the Internet infrastructure, with a particular focus on the Domain Name System (DNS), the .nl TLD, and SIDN's services. We concentrate on applied research in close collaboration with the Dutch and international research community.

SIDN Labs members are technical experts in areas such as DNS measurements, DNS protocols and systems, big data storage and analytics, and privacy protection. They write open source software, analyze vast amounts of data, run experiments, write high quality papers, and actively contribute to Internet organizations such as the IETF, RIPE, and ICANN. Our two current research areas are DNS operations & evolution and privacy-aware network analytics.

SIDN operates the .nl part of the DNS and for more than 5.7 million registered .nl domain names. Over 2.5 million of those are secured with DNSSEC, making .nl the largest secured TLD in the world. Check out our stats page for more details.

I am a member of SIDN's management team and I serve as the chair of the board of directors at NLnet Labs. I'm also a member of the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) at ICANN and I'm on the Supervisory Board of the Enschede Public Library.

I was previously on the (founding) board of Abuse Information Exchange, where I guided the development of AbuseHUB, a service for Dutch access providers to share information on botnet infections. Before I joined SIDN, I was with Telematica Instituut, a public-private research facility, where I led and developed large national and international research projects. I also worked as a senior researcher on topics such as mobility management in IP networks, distributed sensor systems, adaptive multimodal user interfaces, and telco service platforms. I started as a software engineer at Lucent Technologies.

I hold a Ph.D. (2005) and an M.Sc. (1996) in Computer Science, both from the University of Twente, the Netherlands.
